Virtual Classrooms Could Create a Marketplace for Knowledge
In the autumn of 1963, the American magazine Popular Mechanics heralded an innovation that seemed bound to change the world: the “teacherless classroom.” . . .Today the dream has returned. Thanks to broadening Internet access, advances in multimedia and the market potential of millions of historically underserved learners among the developing world’s youth and the rich world’s adults, modern versions of the doughnut building are flowering globally: systems through which chunks of teaching can be “scaled up,” in business jargon, and beamed to hundreds of thousands worldwide.
How do you specify a group channel (not Everyone) from an outside link service (i.e., Twitter)
There isn't a way to share posts from one web feed into different groups, but you can pull all of the web feed's posts into a group using the "Import Site" link for the group. If you created the group or have been made a Group Admin you will have the "Import Site" link under the group name in the right side navigation. Ok...so I can import sites as a group admin and then, for instance, create a special twitter hashtag (maple_hr) that drops into that groups channel? Yes.
Online Courses, Services and Social Networking Tools Foster Opportunities for Community College Students, Study Shows | The University of Texas at Austin
"Responses to our special-focus survey questions about Web 2.0 use indicate that some use of social networking tools improves engagement," says McClenney, "but there is a point of diminishing returns. Using social networking tools to communicate with other students, instructors or staff about coursework correlates with higher levels of engagement, and the more frequently students use these tools for academic purposes, the higher the returns. On the other hand, highly frequent use of social networking tools 'for any purpose,' including uses unrelated to academics, is associated with lower levels of student effort related to their studies."
Future Of Learning: Passionate Peers, Death Of The Classroom, Technologies As Tools - Emerging Trends
"When... peer negotiations occur in a context of public scrutiny, youth are motivated to develop their identities and reputations through these peer-based networks, exchanging comments and links and jockeying for visibility. These efforts at gaining recognition are directed at a network of respected peers rather than formal evaluations of teachers or tests."
Life In Beta--How Design thinking Can Help Us Navigate Through This Time of Cascading Change - BusinessWeek
Designomics—design and economics—are undergoing vast changes. The global economy is emerging from the Great Recession, with a very different shape, a very different trajectory and a very different set of growth engines. Design is also emerging from the recent crisis, with a different form, function and name—Design Thinking.
